An advertising representative primarily engages in selling advertisements. An ad sales opening can be an inside sales or an outside sales opening. The typical duties of an ad sales rep include prospecting, cold-calling, setting up appointments, travelling to prospects’ places of business, and most importantly, convincing prospects to buy advertising space. An advertising representative is also often referred to as an advertising sales representative, advertising executive, ad sales representative, sales representative, outside sales representative, and account executive. Newspaper companies, magazines, other periodicals, and publishing houses are the traditional employers of advertising sales representatives. Recently, however, advertising has undergone a complete makeover thanks to the new concept of online marketing, leading a variety of new electronic media companies to get involved in the field. As with any other sales job, there are no educational requirements to start a career in advertising sales. That said, relationship-building skills and an appealing personality are, of course, essential in any sales job.
