Link to Stage Hypnosis Routines and Trance
Another commonly used example is the ‘hot and cold’ routine. Many hypnotists start their show by continuing the induction in the form of telling the volunteers that they are freezing cold, and constantly getting colder (an eerie wind effect comes from the speakers and the stage lights are dimmed for effect). With enough repetition, suggestion and the added effects, the people on stage begin to feel cold and those who are in light trance states can convince themselves that because what the hypnotist said would happen has indeed happened, then they must be hypnotised. To the audience, watching them hug each other for warmth, this looks like a comical first routine but to the hypnotist, many times this is simply a form of deepening trance in the subjects. Remember, some of your volunteers may already have blacked out and drifted under, but there is no way of telling this on stage without making sure so it’s better to keep yourself safe
