In some instances where the symptoms of BV are so light the woman will never consider she actually has an infection. This is not the majority of cases however. In most instances these symptoms will present themselves as a heavy discharge of grayish matter and a noticeable and pungent smell of fish. The discharge associated with vaginosis is easily spotted as it is thinner and has a different color than normal discharge. Usually it is more noticeable after sex because it is substantially heavier at this time.

The exact cause of vaginosis is still not quite completely understood. Most researchers believe that it is actually a combination of things which come together to contribute to the condition. On the bacteria part of the equation, it is considered to be the decrease of lactobacilli and the increase of anaerobic bacteria which causes the majority of the problem.
