Increase in Homework Does Not Influence Grades
American students and parents are starting to complain about the hours worth of homework given by teachers today. Facts suggest students perform no better with increased amounts of homework. Parents say students don’t get enough sleep and have no time to spend with family. Teachers swear that the amount of homework has not really increased. But According to Harris M. Cooper, who wrote The Battle Over Homework: Common Ground for Administrators, Teachers, and Parents (Corwin Press, 2001), schools should follow “The 10-Minute Rule”, developed by the National PTA and National Education Association. The rule says students should do 10 minutes of homework each night according to grade level. Facts show that giving students practice rote exercises, which are easy for teachers to grade, are not helping students at all.
