Moving Up Through Maintenance
My brother worked for years on the assembly-line in an American-owned plant in Canada. Everyone dreaded the day when the American owners might decide to close the plant and take their jobs south. As talk became more serious, my brother decided to prepare himself for the possibility of losing his job. He began taking manufacturing training courses that dealt with plant and equipment management. He gained a lot of knowledge in these areas, and when the company decided to expand rather than close down, they called on my brother to assist with new facility management. Those courses really paid off in the long run, and my brother’s job was secure until he chose to retire.
